I have forgotten how to read - It sounded good at the time

02:01 pm - I have forgotten how to read

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

There was a time when I would devour a book, all books, anything within reading range of me. On summer vacations, I would sit outside in the sun reading book after book, sometimes more than one a day.

We recently started up a book club that meets once a month.

I read the first book the day of the meeting.

I read three chapters of the second book.

I have yet to start the third book and we're meeting in two weeks.

I just can't seem to bring myself to it like I used to. Reading just isn't holding the same attraction. I used to get pulled in so hard and deep that I would stay up all night to finish. I even read the last two Harry Potter books the day they came out, staying up all night and all the next morning to have time to finish.

I tend to have a few things going on at once, anymore. I knit while I browse. I browse while I watch tv. No one task wants to hold my attention for very long. I have to have something else to keep the brain occupied so I can concentrate on any one thing.

But reading, it's just not fitting into the mix at all right now. It is frustrating, because there are a lot of books I really want to read. I just can't even get them started.

same.

my attention lasts as long as a 2-page article, as long as it has lots of pictures, even if i'm not handling the baby, even if i'm taking a break at work. and i'll stop reading and go on to the next thing if a single sentence bores or jars or fails to amuse.

'at some point,' i tell myself, 'i'll read for real again.' but no further thought is given on it until i remember a scene from a favorite book or find something that reminds me, and i say 'i should re-read that...' even my inner monologue carefully avoids the 'but'
'... it's so long. i'd never finish it these days.'

i understand, though. it's all i can do to get around to writing these days, let alone stick to a single story. spose i should try to condense my ideas all down to short stories, just to get them out, see just how short i can make a story while still developing the world properly.

i'm jealous, by the way... i can barely nurse the baby and browse at the same time, and she's doing all the work! :D i'd hate to see the horrible mess i'd create if i tried crocheting and anything else. ^_^

You have had a World Altering Event, recently. Your attention span lasts about as long as her naps, I bet. :)

The short story idea sounds like a good exercise, really. It would be fun to read those. Though, it's always fun to read what you write.

One she's large enough to hold on by herself, you'll manage. Just let her hang on and get to work. :P

i imagine, when she's bigger, i'll give her piggyback rides while we're out and about, and i'll call her Daigoro while she's hanging on tight. (because i need more Lone Wolf and Cub references, always :D )

i'll get started on the short stories soon. i miss sending you stuff :D

I use to read all the time, then I got a computer and went online, I never read, ever. I started a 50 book a year challenge and made that with no problem, now I'm in a 75 book challenge for the forth year that I meet with no problem. I hardly blog, surf or play any online games anymore. Seems there is a trade off.

oh, and I don't clean house or work in the yard either.

could be just a coincidence...

Yeah, it is a trade off with me, as well. If I read, I don't play games. If I play games, I don't knit. Bleah on it all. I want to be able to do everything! All at once, I tell you!
